    Summary

    Thermography for breast disease diagnosis showed poor accuracy, with many false positives in healthy women and missed cancers. This study suggests thermography is not reliable for routine breast cancer screening.

    Background:

    • Thermography is a non-invasive imaging technique used to detect breast abnormalities.
    • Previous studies have shown mixed results regarding the efficacy of thermography in breast cancer diagnosis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of two types of thermography in identifying breast disease.
    • To determine if thermography can enhance clinical diagnosis of breast cancer.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study involving 502 women over two years.
    • Two types of thermography were employed for breast imaging.
    • Thermographic interpretations were compared with clinical diagnoses and histopathological findings.

    Main Results:

    • Thermography yielded a high rate of equivocal or abnormal results in women with normal or benign breast conditions.
    • Less than half of the proven breast cancer cases presented with abnormal thermograms.
    • Thermography did not improve the accuracy of clinical breast cancer diagnosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Thermography is not a sufficiently precise tool for routine breast disease diagnosis.
    • Abnormal thermograms should not be used as a sole indication for mammography due to high false-positive rates.
    • The inconsistency in thermographic interpretation, except for normal readings, limits its clinical utility.
