    Summary

This study presents a radiographic method to measure acetabular cup version in total hip replacements. Accurate anteversion or retroversion angles can be determined using two anteroposterior radiographs.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic surgery
    • Radiology
    • Biomedical engineering

    Background:

    • Acetabular component version is crucial for total hip prosthesis function.
    • Accurate measurement of anteversion or retroversion is essential for evaluating implant performance.

    Observation:

    • Two anteroposterior hip radiographs are taken, with the contralateral hip flexed to correct for contractures.
    • The X-ray beam is centered on the implant in one radiograph and shifted in the second.
    • Anteversion is indicated by a wider cup opening in the second radiograph.

    Findings:

    • A method is described to calculate the acetabular cup version angle using radiograph measurements.
    • The calculation considers the X-ray beam's center location, cup size, and magnification.
    • This technique achieves an accuracy of +/-2 degrees for version angle determination.

    Implications:

    • This radiographic technique provides a reliable method for assessing acetabular component version post-total hip replacement.
    • It aids in the evaluation of implant fit and potential complications.
    • The method is applicable to cups with outside diameters ranging from 44-56 mm.
