Peritoneal cell populations during tumour injection

E De Heer, J W De Groot, W Den Otter

    International Journal of Tissue Reactions
    |January 1, 1982
    PubMed
    Summary

Tumor rejection involves significant changes in peritoneal immune cells, particularly mononuclear phagocytes. Immunization with irradiated tumor cells enhances anti-tumor immunity more effectively than with mitomycin-C treated cells.

Mathematical analysis of the cellular immune reaction against tumour cells.

    Immunology today·2014

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Cancer Research
    • Cell Biology

    Background:

    • Understanding anti-tumor immunity is crucial for developing effective cancer therapies.
    • Peritoneal immune cell responses play a key role in tumor rejection.
    • The SL2 lymphoma model provides a system to study these cellular events.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the cellular events during tumor rejection in immunized and non-immunized mice.
    • To elucidate the role of peritoneal cells in allogeneic and syngeneic tumor systems.
    • To compare the efficacy of different immunization strategies.

    Main Methods:

    • Induction of anti-tumor immunity via intraperitoneal injection of tumor cells (normal, irradiated, or mitomycin-C treated).
    • Analysis of peritoneal cell population kinetics (total and differential counts) using microscopy.
    • Assessment of lysosomal enzyme beta-glucuronidase activity in mononuclear phagocytes.

    Main Results:

    • Peritoneal exudate cell composition and morphology change significantly during tumor rejection.
    • Beta-glucuronidase activity in mononuclear phagocytes shows significant variation.
    • Tumor cell dose influences peritoneal cellular population changes.
    • Irradiated tumor cells induced greater anti-tumor immunity than mitomycin-C treated cells upon challenge.

    Conclusions:

    • Peritoneal immune cell dynamics are critical for tumor rejection.
    • Immunization with irradiated tumor cells is more effective in generating anti-tumor immunity.
    • The study highlights the importance of cell preparation in immunotherapy strategies.
