    Summary

    Unsteady fixation in functional amblyopia does not cause reduced spatial contrast sensitivity. Studies show these vision losses are not a direct result of eye movement issues in amblyopic eyes.

    Background:

    • Functional amblyopia, a unilateral visual acuity loss of unknown origin, often presents with unsteady fixation.
    • Spatial contrast sensitivity is frequently impaired in amblyopic eyes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether unsteady fixation contributes to spatial contrast sensitivity loss in functional amblyopia.
    • To determine if retinal image motion from unsteady fixation directly causes contrast sensitivity deficits.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurements of spatial contrast sensitivity were taken under conditions of retinal-image stabilization.
    • Retinal image motions from unsteadily fixating eyes were recorded.
    • These recorded motions were superimposed on the central visual field of normal subjects.

    Main Results:

    • Retinal image stabilization did not eliminate the measured spatial contrast sensitivity losses in amblyopic eyes.
    • Superimposing recorded unsteady fixation motions onto normal subjects' visual fields did not induce contrast sensitivity losses.
    • These findings indicate that unsteady fixation is not the direct cause of the observed contrast sensitivity deficits.

    Conclusions:

    • Unsteady fixation does not appear to be a primary contributor to the spatial contrast sensitivity impairments seen in functional amblyopia.
    • The visual acuity loss in amblyopia likely stems from factors other than the immediate consequences of unsteady fixation.
