Supravalvular aortic stenosis in a twin

G Neilson, K F Hossack

    British Heart Journal
    |October 1, 1978

    Summary

This study reports a rare case of subvalvular aortic stenosis in one of dissimilar twins. The findings suggest that supravalvular aortic stenosis may have a genetic basis, rather than an environmental cause.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Genetics
    • Twin Studies

    Background:

    • Subvalvular aortic stenosis is a congenital heart defect.
    • Dissimilar twins present unique opportunities to study genetic versus environmental influences.

    Observation:

    • A case of subvalvular aortic stenosis was identified in one twin from a dissimilar pair.
    • No congenital heart defects were noted in the co-twin.

    Findings:

    • The case supports the hypothesis that supravalvular aortic stenosis has a genetic etiology.
    • Environmental factors are less likely to be the primary cause of this condition.

    Implications:

    • Understanding the genetic basis of aortic stenosis can aid in risk assessment and genetic counseling.
    • Further research into genetic factors may reveal novel therapeutic targets for congenital heart diseases.
