    Summary

    Reimplanting spleen fragments into the omentum in dogs restored key spleen functions, unlike splenectomy. This splenic preservation offers significant functional recovery compared to complete spleen removal.

    Background:

    • Splenectomy, the surgical removal of the spleen, can lead to impaired immune function and increased susceptibility to infections.
    • Reimplantation of splenic tissue may offer a method to preserve some splenic functions after surgical removal.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the functional capacity of replanted splenic fragments in dogs.
    • To compare the immune function and splenic parameter recovery between dogs with intact spleens, splenectomized dogs, and dogs with replanted splenic fragments.

    Main Methods:

    • Three groups of five dogs each were studied: intact spleen, post-splenectomy, and splenic replantation.
    • Fifteen splenic fragments were implanted into the omentum.
    • Howell-Jolly bodies, I125-tagged pneumococcal clearance, and pneumococcal antibody titers were assessed.
