    Summary

    Neurological complications in chronic renal failure patients can be detected early. Evoked potential recordings, like visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs), show subtle central nervous system (CNS) changes before clinical symptoms appear.

    Background:

    • Chronic renal failure (CRF) and its treatment, dialysis, are associated with neurological complications.
    • Increased lifespan of uremic patients necessitates understanding long-term neurological effects.
    • Subtle central nervous system (CNS) changes may occur in CRF patients despite normal clinical examinations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the utility of electrophysiological tests in detecting early neurological damage in uremic patients.
    • To correlate evoked potential abnormalities with the status of chronic renal failure.

    • Electroencephalogram (EEG), pattern visual evoked potentials (VEPs), and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) were recorded.
    • Twelve uremic patients with normal neurological and psychiatric examinations were studied.
