Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

6.2K
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body...

Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT

1.8K
Radiological investigations, including X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, are critical for diagnosing and evaluating various medical conditions. These imaging techniques provide valuable insights into the body's internal structures, aiding in the detection of abnormalities, assessment of disease progression, and development of treatment strategies. This article delves into two primary radiological investigations, chest X-rays and CT scans, outlining their purpose, procedures, and...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

722
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Imaging Studies II: Positron Emission Tomography and Scintigraphy

853
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that provides crucial insights into the body's physiological functions at a molecular level. It is an indispensable resource for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring various illnesses, notably cancer, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular conditions.

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Thyroid nodules, including nonpalpable ones, are linked to prior radiation therapy. Screening scintigraphy is recommended for high-risk individuals, even with normal palpation results.

    Area of Science:

    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Endocrinology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Childhood radiation therapy for benign head and neck conditions is a known risk factor for thyroid abnormalities.
    • Previous studies have indicated a correlation between radiation exposure and thyroid nodule development.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between past therapeutic irradiation to the head or neck and the incidence of thyroid nodules.
    • To determine if scintigraphy can detect subclinical thyroid abnormalities in irradiated individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • 99mTc-pertechnetate thyroid scintigraphy was performed on 99 control subjects and 198 patients with a history of head/neck radiation.
    • Comparison of scintigraphic findings between irradiated patients and controls, with and without palpable nodules.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly higher rates of abnormal thyroid scintigrams were observed in the irradiated group (55/198) compared to controls (1/99).
    • Abnormalities persisted even when palpable nodules were excluded (16/150 irradiated vs. 1/97 controls).

    Conclusions:

    • Thyroid nodules, including nonpalpable ones detected by scintigraphy, are associated with previous radiation therapy.
    • Screening scintigraphy is supported for high-risk individuals (e.g., >700 R childhood exposure) with normal palpation findings.
