    Background:

    • Asteroid hyalosis is characterized by lipid-calcium deposits in the vitreous.
    • Understanding its impact on vitreous structure and posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is crucial.

    Observation:

    • Studied 16 patients (average age 65) with asteroid hyalosis using slitlamp biomicroscopy.
    • Vitreous gel was mostly normal (81%), with moderate liquefaction in 19%.
    • Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) was absent in 63%, partial in 25%, and complete in 12%.

    Findings:

    • Asteroid bodies are composed of irregular calcific material and complex lipids.
    • These bodies are enmeshed in normal vitreous collagen fibrils.
    • Macrophages and multinucleated epithelioid cells were observed around asteroid bodies.
