Drowning risks to epileptic children: a study from Hawaii

    Summary

    Epileptiform seizures rarely cause childhood drowning incidents. Supervised, well-controlled epileptic children have a very low risk of fatal immersion accidents.

    Background:

    • Epileptiform seizures are a potential risk factor for drowning and near-drowning incidents in children.
    • Understanding the incidence and outcomes of these events is crucial for child safety.

    Observation:

    • A five-year study in Hawaii examined 140 childhood immersion accidents.
    • Four accidents (2.9%) were partly caused by epileptiform seizures, with no fatalities.
    • Combined data from Hawaii and Brisbane studies showed no drowning deaths in epileptic children in pools or seas.

    Findings:

    • The incidence of immersion accidents due to seizures in children is low.
    • Epileptiform seizures are an infrequent cause of childhood drowning.
    • No fatalities were recorded among epileptic children in the studied immersion accidents.

    Implications:

    • For mentally normal, well-controlled epileptic children, supervised water activities pose a minimal drowning risk.
    • This research informs safety guidelines and parental supervision strategies for epileptic children.
    • Effective anticonvulsant therapy and vigilant supervision significantly mitigate drowning risks for epileptic children.
