D L Goldenberg, M S Egan, A S Cohen

    The Journal of Rheumatology
    |March 1, 1982

    Summary

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects cartilage and bone, but its synovial membrane changes are less understood. This study found inflammation in the synovium of most OA patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Orthopedics
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by cartilage and bone abnormalities.
    • Prospective reviews of histopathologic changes in OA synovial membranes are limited.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the histopathologic changes in the synovial membranes of patients with osteoarthritis (OA).
    • To determine the prevalence and severity of synovitis in OA.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluation of 15 consecutive patients with OA undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty.
    • Histopathologic examination of random synovial membrane samples.

    Main Results:

    • Synovial membrane abnormalities were detected in 13 out of 15 patients (all but 2).
    • Nine patients showed mild or moderate synovitis.
    • Four patients exhibited marked synovial inflammation.

    Conclusions:

    • Inflammatory synovitis is a common finding in osteoarthritis.
    • Synovial membrane changes are prevalent in OA patients undergoing joint replacement.
