    Summary

This study reports on two rare cases of proximal tibiofibular synostosis in children, a condition where leg bones fuse. The fusion was associated with limb shortening, but the exact cause remains unclear.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Pediatric Orthopedics
    • Skeletal Dysplasias

    Background:

    • Proximal tibiofibular synostosis is a rare congenital anomaly.
    • This condition involves the abnormal fusion of the proximal tibia and fibula.
    • Cases unassociated with other congenital diseases are exceptionally rare.

    Observation:

    • Two skeletally immature patients presented with this rare condition.
    • Both patients exhibited a synostosis in the proximal tibiofibular region.
    • Limb shortening in the affected segments was a consistent observation.

    Findings:

    • The observed proximal tibiofibular synostosis was associated with limb shortening.
    • The exact relationship between the synostosis and limb shortening is not yet understood.
    • These cases represent a unique presentation of this rare skeletal anomaly.

    Implications:

    • Further research is needed to elucidate the etiology of proximal tibiofibular synostosis.
    • Understanding this condition may improve diagnosis and management of limb length discrepancies in pediatric patients.
    • This report contributes to the limited literature on isolated proximal tibiofibular synostosis.
