    Summary

    99mTc-PIPIDA scintigraphy effectively differentiates biliary pancreatitis from nonbiliary pancreatitis. An abnormal biliary scan, combined with elevated amylase, strongly suggests biliary pancreatitis, while a normal scan largely rules it out.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of 99mTc-PIPIDA scintigraphy in distinguishing between biliary and nonbiliary pancreatitis.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study involving 60 patients (40 with biliary pancreatitis, 20 with nonbiliary pancreatitis).
    • Scintigraphic scans were categorized based on gallbladder visualization and intestinal excretion times of 99mTc-PIPIDA.

    • 95% of patients with nonbiliary pancreatitis had normal scans (19/20).
