    Summary

    Ketamine as an induction agent for caesarean sections resulted in excellent Apgar scores for newborns and no awareness during surgery. This study suggests ketamine is a viable routine anesthetic for this procedure.

    Background:

    • Caesarean sections require safe and effective anesthetic induction agents.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ketamine as an induction agent for caesarean section anesthesia.
    • To assess neonatal outcomes and maternal mental status following ketamine-based anesthesia during caesarean delivery.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving 100 patients undergoing caesarean section.
    • Ketamine (1.2 mg/kg) was used as the primary induction agent with atropine and diazepam premedication.
    • Anesthesia was maintained with nitrous oxide and oxygen (FIO2 0.4), with fentanyl and diazepam administered after umbilical cord clamping.

    Main Results:

    • Excellent Apgar scores were observed in newborns (mean 9.1 at 1 min, 9.9 at 5 min), even in cases of known intrauterine asphyxia.
    • No patients reported intraoperative awareness.
    • Maternal mental condition post-operatively was acceptable, with minimal reported dreams and no hallucinations.

    Conclusions:

    • Ketamine can be safely and effectively used as a routine induction agent for caesarean section anesthesia.
    • The anesthetic regimen provides good neonatal outcomes and acceptable maternal mental status.
