    Summary

    Midazolam, an alternative anesthetic induction agent, demonstrated a slower onset compared to thiopentone but presented fewer cardiovascular and local side effects. Despite longer-lasting apnea, differences had no significant clinical impact, establishing midazolam as a viable option.

    • To compare the anesthetic induction characteristics of midazolam with thiopentone.
    • To evaluate the cardiovascular and local sequelae associated with midazolam versus thiopentone.
    • To assess the incidence and duration of apnea following induction with midazolam or thiopentone.

    Main Methods:

    • Patients received premedication including scopolamine, morphine, and nitrazepam.
    • Intravenous (i.v.) midazolam (0.15 mg/kg) was administered for anesthetic induction.
    • Thiopentone (4.67 mg/kg i.v.) served as the comparator agent.
