    Summary

    Thrombocytopenia, a low platelet count, is common in leptospirosis patients. This condition significantly increases the risk of developing acute renal failure, a link previously unreported.

    Background:

    • Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection with diverse clinical manifestations.
    • Thrombocytopenia is a known complication of various infections, but its frequency and impact in leptospirosis are not well-documented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence of thrombocytopenia in patients diagnosed with leptospirosis.
    • To investigate the association between thrombocytopenia and the development of acute renal failure in leptospirosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of patient data.
    • Evaluation of platelet counts and renal function in confirmed leptospirosis cases.

    Main Results:

    • Thrombocytopenia (platelet count ≤ 100 x 10(3)/mm3) was observed in 56.3% of the studied patients.
    • Patients with thrombocytopenia had a significantly higher incidence of renal failure (72.2%) compared to those with normal platelet counts (21.4%).
    • The association between thrombocytopenia and renal failure was statistically significant (P < 0.02).

    Conclusions:

    • Thrombocytopenia is a frequent finding in leptospirosis.
    • The presence of thrombocytopenia is strongly associated with an increased risk of acute renal failure in leptospirosis patients.
