    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Surgical Oncology

    Background:

    • Renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer) frequently presents at advanced stages.
    • Conventional radical nephrectomy showed poor results for advanced kidney cancer.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate a modified radical nephrectomy technique for advanced renal carcinoma.
    • To improve surgical outcomes for patients with advanced kidney cancer.

    Main Methods:

    • A modified radical nephrectomy was performed on 50 patients between 1962 and 1976.
    • The modification involved excluding distant metastasis and resecting adherent colon segments.
    • En bloc resection of the tumor, adrenal gland, regional lymph nodes, and potentially the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) was performed.

    Main Results:

    • Two patients, initially deemed inoperable, survived for over 3 years following the modified procedure.
    • The modified technique aimed to manage locally advanced kidney cancer more effectively.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified radical nephrectomy offers a viable surgical option for advanced renal carcinoma.
    • This approach can potentially extend survival for patients with locally advanced or previously inoperable kidney cancer.
