    Background:

    • The cholinergic system in the neural retina plays a crucial role in visual processing.
    • Understanding the development of neurotransmitter release is key to comprehending retinal maturation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the developmental changes in acetylcholine release in chick embryo neural retina.
    • To determine the relationship between acetylcholine release and the formation of cholinergic synapses during embryonic development.

    Main Methods:

    • Neural retina layers from chick embryos (6-16 days) were used.
    • A perfusion system collected [3H]acetylcholine ([3H]ACh) after labeling with [3H]choline.
    • Release was measured under basal conditions and after stimulation with KCl or glutamate.

    Main Results:

    • Both basal and stimulated release of [3H]ACh showed a significant increase with developmental age.
