    Summary

    Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) using sine wave or pulsed-square wave stimuli did not show significant memory loss differences. Clinical functioning favored sine wave ECT, though not significantly over pulsed-square wave.

    Background:

    • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental health conditions.
    • Different stimulus waveforms, such as sine wave and pulsed-square wave, are used in ECT.
    • The impact of stimulus waveform on cognitive function, particularly memory, is an area of ongoing research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effects of alternating sine wave versus brief pulsed-square wave electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on clinical functioning and subjective memory loss.
    • To investigate the hypothesis that a weaker stimulus (pulsed-square wave) would result in less memory loss compared to sine wave ECT.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-four patients undergoing ECT were divided into two groups, receiving either sine wave or pulsed-square wave stimulus.
    • Patients were evaluated post-treatment for clinical functioning and subjective memory loss.
    • A control group was included for comparison on memory tests.
