    Summary

    Marine sponges exhibit alloimmune memory, demonstrated by faster rejection of subsequent foreign tissue grafts. This immune memory in sponges is short-lived, lasting only 3-4 weeks, unlike in vertebrates.

    Background:

    • Alloimmune memory, characterized by accelerated rejection of second-set grafts compared to third-party grafts, has been observed in several marine sponge species.
    • Sponges, belonging to the least complex major metazoan phylum, offer a unique model to study fundamental immunological processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To critically examine the essential features of alloimmune memory in the marine sponge Callyspongia diffusa.
    • To investigate the kinetics and duration of immune memory in a basal metazoan.

    Main Methods:

    • Grafting and parabiosis experiments were performed using allogeneic tissue from Callyspongia diffusa.
    • Rejection times of primary and secondary grafts were monitored to assess immune memory.

    Main Results:

    • Immunologic memory spread rapidly throughout the sponge's body tissues, despite the absence of a circulatory system.
    • Heightened immune reactivity persisted for a limited duration of 3 to 4 weeks post-primary sensitization.

    • Callyspongia diffusa exhibits a transient form of alloimmune memory, differing significantly from the long-term memory observed in vertebrates.
    • This short-term memory is sufficient for the sponge to effectively respond to repeated integrity challenges.
