    Thyroid hormone therapy and aging can lead to osteopenia, a bone density loss. High-dose thyroid hormone (≥3 grains/day) significantly increases osteopenia risk in women.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effects of thyroid replacement therapy and other factors on bone mass.
    • To identify women at higher risk for osteopenia due to thyroid hormone use.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured combined cortical thickness (CCT) of the second metacarpal bone.
    • Analyzed data from 151 women undergoing thyroid hormone therapy.
    • Assessed correlations with age, body size, menopausal status, smoking, and estrogen replacement therapy.

    Main Results:

    • Age was the strongest predictor of decreased CCT (0.045 mm/year).
    • Estrogen replacement therapy was associated with higher CCT.
