Recovery from prolonged sensorineural hearing loss

    Summary

    Sensorineural hearing loss can sometimes resolve spontaneously, even after years of deafness. This study presents cases of reversible hearing loss, suggesting potential capillary obstruction in the inner ear as a cause.

    Background:

    • Diagnoses included Meniere's disease, viral, and idiopathic sudden deafness.

    • Hearing recovery occurred in all presented cases of SNHL.
    • Suggests reversible SNHL may be more common than reported.
    • Proposes temporary stria vascularis capillary obstruction leading to hypoxia and hearing loss.

    • Highlights the possibility of hearing recovery in certain SNHL cases.
    • Suggests further investigation into the mechanisms of reversible SNHL.
    • May influence diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for sudden hearing loss.
