    Summary

    Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) may help reduce exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) in asthma patients. Studies show it significantly attenuated airway constriction after exercise compared to a placebo.

    Background:

    • Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) is a common condition in asthma patients.
    • The potential role of nutritional supplements in managing EIB requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in mitigating exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) in asthmatic individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 12 asthmatic subjects with EIB.
    • Subjects received either 500 mg of ascorbic acid or a placebo on separate days.
    • Pulmonary function was assessed using partial and maximal expiratory flow-volume (PEFV and MEFV) curves.

    Main Results:

    • Ascorbic acid pretreatment significantly reduced bronchospasm post-exercise compared to placebo.
    • Key indicators, forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), showed less decrease after ascorbic acid administration.
    • Specifically, FVC decreased by 0.23 L (ascorbic acid) vs. 0.48 L (placebo), and FEV1 decreased by 0.24 L (ascorbic acid) vs. 0.44 L (placebo).

    Conclusions:

    • Ascorbic acid demonstrates a mild anti-bronchospastic effect in individuals experiencing EIB.
    • These findings suggest a potential therapeutic role for vitamin C in managing exercise-induced asthma symptoms.
