Osteomyelitis caused by viridans streptococci

Summary

This study reports the first case of long bone osteomyelitis caused by viridans streptococci. A 34-year-old man recovered after treatment with penicillin and gentamicin.

Background:

Osteomyelitis, a bone infection, typically arises from Staphylococcus aureus.
Hematogenous seeding is a common route for bacterial bone infections.

Observation:

A 34-year-old male presented with proximal femur osteomyelitis.
No underlying diseases were reported in the patient.
Viridans streptococci were the sole pathogens identified during surgery.

Findings:

The patient received intravenous penicillin G potassium and gentamicin sulfate.
Successful treatment resulted in patient recovery.
This is the first documented instance of long bone osteomyelitis attributed to viridans streptococci via hematogenous spread.

Implications:

Highlights viridans streptococci as a potential cause of osteomyelitis in long bones.
Suggests a need to consider less common pathogens in bone infections.
Demonstrates effective antibiotic therapy for this rare presentation.
