    Summary

Congenital large retinal vessels, termed retinal macrovessels, were observed in seven patients with good vision. These anomalies can present with or without arteriovenous communications and capillary nonperfusion.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Retinal vascular diseases
    • Congenital retinal anomalies

    Background:

    • Retinal macrovessels are rare congenital anomalies characterized by enlarged blood vessels in the retina.
    • Understanding their clinical and angiographic features is crucial for diagnosis and management.

    Observation:

    • Seven patients with unilateral large retinal vessels supplying or draining the macula were studied.
    • These vessels were located both inferior and superior to the horizontal raphe.
    • All patients maintained good visual acuity.

    Findings:

    • Two patients had a concomitant foveolar cyst in the affected eye.
    • Four eyes exhibited small perifoveolar arteriovenous communications.
    • Four eyes displayed abnormal areas of retinal capillary nonperfusion.
    • Delayed dye drainage from the enlarged vessels was frequently observed.

    Implications:

    • The term 'retinal macrovessels' is proposed for these congenital anomalies.
    • These findings contribute to the characterization of retinal macrovessels.
    • Further research may elucidate the long-term visual outcomes and potential complications.
