[Emergency therapy of pneumothorax using a Tiegel-valve]
Abstract:
Pneumothorax is a frequent complication in trauma victims. The resulting respiratory insufficiency, especially in cases of tension pneumothorax, must be treated with a flutter valve prior to hospital admission. A commercially available valve is described. An advantage of this model is that the metal canula can be removed, leaving only the plastic sheath in place. The narrow lumen however is a disadvantage. Because of its low cost and standardized dimensions, it should be included in all emergency sets.
