    Summary

    Electrical stimulation revealed that prolonged running and walking initially enhanced muscle responses. However, specific tensions decreased, with effects recovering within 2 hours, unlike box-stepping which caused lasting weakness.

    Background:

    • Assessing human muscle function post-exercise often involves electrical stimulation.
    • Submaximal stimulation parameters may influence the interpretation of muscle response changes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of different exercise types (running, walking, box-stepping) on triceps surae muscle function using electrical stimulation.
    • To evaluate the validity of submaximal stimulation voltages and frequency ratios in assessing exercise-induced muscle fatigue and weakness.

    Main Methods:

    • Electrical stimulation of the triceps surae in five healthy males after 1-2 hours of level running and uphill walking.
    • Measurements included twitch and tetanic tensions at various frequencies (10-100 Hz) and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC).
    • Comparison with responses after box-stepping exercise and a 2-minute fatigue test.

    Main Results:

    • Running and walking initially enhanced twitch and tetanic responses but reduced supramaximal tensions (time to peak tension, twitch, and tetanic tensions) at lower frequencies (10-20 Hz).
    • High-frequency stimulation (50-100 Hz) showed voltage-dependent changes and reduced MVC. These effects recovered within ~2 hours.
    • Box-stepping induced a more pronounced and long-lasting fall in twitch and tetanic tensions, altering the 20/50 Hz ratio, indicating significant muscle weakness.

    Conclusions:

    • Submaximal stimulation voltages and frequency ratios may not be reliable for testing human muscle function after certain exercises.
    • Prolonged walking and running do not lead to long-lasting muscle weakness.
    • Box-stepping exercise results in significant, long-lasting muscle weakness, questioning its use as a standard fatigue test.
