    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of glucocorticoid receptors in human term fetal membranes (amnion, choriodecidua, and decidua).
    • To compare the binding of [3H]dexamethasone in human fetal membranes with sheep fetal lung tissue.

    Main Methods:

    • Incubation of cytosol preparations with [3H]dexamethasone at 0°C.
    • Assessment of specific binding of [3H]dexamethasone in cytosol and nuclear preparations.
    • Investigation of the effect of sodium molybdate on steroid uptake.
    • Scatchard plot analysis to determine binding affinity and capacity.

    Main Results:

    • Human term fetal membranes showed low specific binding of [3H]dexamethasone under basal conditions.
    • No significant nuclear translocation of the steroid was observed in choriodecidual homogenate.

    Conclusions:

    • Human term fetal membranes possess specific glucocorticoid receptors.
    • These receptors are present in low concentrations compared to other known target tissues.
    • The findings suggest a potential role for glucocorticoids in human fetal membrane function at term.
