    Background:

    • Hematologic studies indicate reduced erythrocyte counts and increased cell size in aging individuals.
    • Age-related changes in hematopoiesis are complex and not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate age-related changes in erythrocyte levels and mean erythrocyte size.
    • To assess the role of vitamin B12 or folate deficiency in these changes using the deoxyuridine (dU) suppression test.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 102 healthy men aged 20-79, analyzing erythrocyte count, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin.
    • Utilized a modified deoxyuridine (dU) suppression test on bone marrow cells from young and aged men.
    • Measured 3H-thymidine and 3H-uridine uptake in nucleated bone marrow cells.

    • Altered nucleic acid metabolism, potentially unbalanced cell growth, may underlie age-related hematopoiesis changes.
    • Changes in nucleated cell fractions could also contribute to observed hematologic alterations in the elderly.
