    Background:

    • Hepatic amebic abscesses are a significant clinical concern.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To retrospectively analyze sonographic findings in hepatic amebic abscesses.
    • To identify characteristic sonographic patterns suggestive of amebic etiology.
    • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of specific ultrasound features.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of sonograms from 106 patients with 143 hepatic amebic abscesses.
    • Evaluation of specific sonographic features including wall echoes, shape, echogenicity, location, and sonic enhancement.
    • Correlation of sonographic findings with clinical diagnosis.

    Main Results:

    • A characteristic pattern (lack of wall echoes, round/oval shape, hypoechogenicity, capsular contiguity, distal enhancement) was observed in 37.8% of abscesses.
    • Most other abscesses shared most but not all of these features.
    • Bizarre findings and increased echogenicity were noted more frequently than previously reported; lesions were predominantly anechoic at normal gain.

    Conclusions:

    • A specific sonographic pattern is highly suggestive of hepatic amebic abscesses.
    • Trans-diaphragmatic pleural involvement is a helpful diagnostic adjunct.
    • Sonography plays a vital role in the diagnosis of hepatic amebic abscesses.
