Refined carbohydrate as a contributing factor in reactive hypoglycemia

    Summary

    Reducing refined carbohydrates significantly improved symptoms in patients with idiopathic reactive hypoglycemia. This dietary change was more impactful than reducing total carbohydrate intake.

    Background:

    • Idiopathic reactive hypoglycemia (IRH) is a condition characterized by rapid drops in blood glucose after meals.
    • Dietary management is a cornerstone of IRH treatment, but specific macronutrient targets remain debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of dietary modifications, specifically refined carbohydrate reduction, on symptom severity in patients diagnosed with IRH.
    • To compare the effects of reduced refined carbohydrate intake versus reduced total carbohydrate intake on IRH symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight patients with IRH underwent dietary recall to assess their intake before and after nutritional counseling.
    • Counseling focused on a diet with 100 gm of carbohydrate daily, with detailed analysis of macronutrient composition changes.
