[Intracellular acid-base balance. Introduction into a new field of experimental anaesthesia]

Recent research shows that diagnosis and therapeutic control of severe acid-base disturbances by means of blood-gas analysis is not sufficient. The whole intracellular compartment which is excluded from the measurements seems to play a much more important rôle in the overall acid-base regulation that it was expected. Methods which were already used for the determination of intracellular pH are reviewed and the DMO-method which is used today routinely for experimental medicine is discussed as a new field of research in experimental anaesthesia.
