    Summary

    Large doses of morphine increased myocardial infarction size in rats, contrary to its common recommendation for patients with reduced cardiac reserve. This study highlights potential risks of morphine in cardiac patients.

    Background:

    • Morphine is frequently recommended for anesthesia in patients with compromised cardiac function.
    • However, its precise impact on the balance of myocardial oxygen supply and demand remains unclear.
    • Understanding these effects is crucial for patient safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of large-dose morphine administration on the size of experimentally induced myocardial infarction in a rat model.
    • To evaluate the influence of morphine on myocardial oxygen balance in the context of ischemia.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats received a subcutaneous injection of morphine (3 mg/kg) or saline 10 minutes prior to thoracotomy and coronary artery ligation.
    • Myocardial infarction size was quantified using histological analysis 48 hours post-procedure.

    Main Results:

    • Rats treated with morphine exhibited significantly larger myocardial infarction areas compared to the saline control group (45.8% vs. 35.3% of left ventricular area, p < 0.05).
