    Area of Science:

    • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
    • Psychiatric Comorbidity
    • Behavioral Science

    Background:

    • Developmental disabilities encompass a range of conditions affecting development.
    • Problem behaviors and psychiatric impairments frequently co-occur in this population.
    • Understanding risk factors is crucial for effective support.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and correlates of problem behavior in a large cohort of individuals with developmental disabilities.
    • To examine the relationship between problem behavior, psychiatric impairment, and demographic/residential factors.
    • To inform service provision and future research directions.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of data from over 30,000 individuals receiving developmental disabilities services.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparison of problem behavior rates across age groups, intellectual disability severity, and residential settings.
  • Assessment of the association between psychiatric impairment and problem behavior types.
  • Main Results:

    • Adolescents and adults exhibited higher rates of problem behavior than children or the elderly.
    • Individuals with more severe intellectual disabilities and those in more restrictive settings showed increased problem behaviors.
    • Psychiatric impairment was linked to more frequent problem behaviors, particularly affective and cognitive types.

    Conclusions:

    • Age, intellectual disability severity, residential setting, and psychiatric status are significant factors associated with problem behavior.
    • Findings highlight the need for tailored interventions and support within community settings.
    • Further research should explore the specific mechanisms linking psychiatric impairment to problem behaviors.
