A rare complication after open heart surgery, false aneurysms can be surgically managed. This case report details a successful repair of an ascending aorta false aneurysm using a novel cardiopulmonary bypass technique.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Surgery
    • Aortic Aneurysm Research
    • Surgical Complications

    Background:

    • False aneurysms are uncommon complications following open heart surgery.
    • Ascending aorta false aneurysms can arise from aortic vent sites post-cardiac procedures.

    Observation:

    • A patient developed an ascending aorta false aneurysm four months after mitral and aortic valve replacement.
    • Extensive adhesions prevented standard aortic dissection and cross-clamping.

    Findings:

    • A femoro-femoral cannulation, low flow, low pressure, and low temperature cardiopulmonary bypass was employed.
    • The false aneurysm was successfully resected and repaired with a Dacron patch.
    • A Foley catheter was inserted into the ascending aorta for a bloodless field.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Implications:

    • This modified surgical approach offers a viable solution for managing complex aortic false aneurysms.
    • The technique is particularly useful in cases with significant adhesions, avoiding aortic dissection.
