Micronodular adrenal disease: a light and electron microscopic study

P S Hasleton, H H Ali, C Anfield

    Journal of Clinical Pathology
    |October 1, 1982
    PubMed
    Summary

This study presents a rare case of Cushing's syndrome in a teenage girl caused by micronodular adrenal disease. The research suggests abnormal cell migration from the zona fasciculata to the zona reticularis may cause this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Pathology
    • Adrenal Gland Biology

    Background:

    • Cushing's syndrome is a hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure to high cortisol levels.
    • Micronodular adrenal disease is a rare cause of Cushing's syndrome, characterized by multiple small nodules in the adrenal glands.

    Observation:

    • A 17-year-old female presented with Cushing's syndrome.
    • Adrenal glands exhibited both black and yellow nodules.
    • Histological examination revealed cells with lipofuschin, clear or eosinophilic cytoplasm, and prominent nuclei, with lymphocytes being a significant feature.

    Findings:

    • No zona reticularis cells were identified.
    • The origin of the micronodular adrenal disease appeared to be the inner layer of the zona fasciculata.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • A hypothesis proposed abnormal cell migration and destruction from the zona fasciculata to the zona reticularis.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights a potential new mechanism for Cushing's syndrome development.
    • Understanding adrenal cell dynamics is crucial for diagnosing and treating hormonal imbalances.
    • Further research into adrenal cell migration could reveal novel therapeutic targets.
