Severe nosebleeds (epistaxis) unresponsive to standard treatments can be effectively managed with embolization. This minimally invasive procedure offers a valuable alternative to surgery for intractable cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Interventional Radiology

    Background:

    • Severe epistaxis presents a significant therapeutic challenge.
    • Conventional management strategies are often insufficient for intractable cases.

    Observation:

    • Three cases of epistaxis with unusual causes, refractory to conventional treatment, were studied.
    • Selective carotid angiography was performed, followed by intra-arterial embolization.

    Findings:

    • Intra-arterial embolization proved effective in controlling severe epistaxis.
    • Embolization offers advantages over surgery, including accessibility and bypassing collateral flow.

    Implications:

    • Embolization is a valuable adjunctive or primary treatment for uncontrolled epistaxis.
