Gastric secretion in hyperthyroidism

K Aoyagi, K Uehara, K Ito

    The Japanese Journal of Surgery

    Summary

Hyperthyroidism and peptic ulcers are rarely seen together. This study suggests their coexistence may be more common than previously thought, noting higher gastric acid output in hyperthyroid patients with ulcers.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Internal Medicine

    Background:

    • The co-occurrence of hyperthyroidism and peptic ulcer disease is traditionally considered rare.
    • Limited data exists on the actual prevalence and potential correlation between these two conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between hyperthyroidism and peptic ulcer disease.
    • To determine if hyperthyroidism is a more frequent comorbidity with peptic ulcers than commonly believed.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 24 patients diagnosed with both hyperthyroidism and peptic ulcer between 1968 and 1978.
    • Comparison of gastric acid output levels between hyperthyroid patients with peptic ulcers and control groups.

    Main Results:

    • A cohort of 24 patients with coexisting hyperthyroidism and peptic ulcer was identified over a decade.
    • Hyperthyroid patients exhibited significantly higher mean gastric acid output compared to controls.
    • Eight hyperthyroid patients demonstrated exceptionally high gastric acid output levels.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings challenge the notion that hyperthyroidism and peptic ulcer disease are extremely rare comorbidities.
    • Elevated gastric acid production in hyperthyroidism may contribute to the development or exacerbation of peptic ulcers.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise relationship and prevalence.
