    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Asymptomatic meningiomas are incidentally discovered during neurosurgery or autopsies. These incidental meningiomas, often found during surgery for other conditions like cerebral aneurysms, are typically small and easily removed.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurosurgery
    • Neuropathology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Intracranial tumors, including meningioma, glioma, and pituitary adenoma, are occasionally discovered incidentally during operations for other neurosurgical conditions or found in autopsy specimens.
    • Meningiomas are the most frequent type of incidentally discovered intracranial tumor.
    • This study focuses on five cases of asymptomatic meningiomas found unexpectedly, termed "Incidental Meningioma."

    Observation:

    • The five incidental meningiomas were identified in 5 out of 38 clinical cases of intracranial meningioma over twelve years.
    • One incidental intracranial tumor was found in 480 autopsy cases during the same period.
    • The five clinical cases involved women aged 48-72; three were found during aneurysm surgery, one during hematoma evacuation, and one via CT scan.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Findings:

    • Tumor sizes ranged from 7-20 mm, except for one case measuring 30x40 mm.
    • Locations included three convexity, one pterion, and one falx meningiomas.
    • Histologically, a psammomatous type of transitional meningioma was noted as relatively rare.

    Implications:

    • Incidental meningiomas appear relatively rare in cerebral aneurysm cases, occurring in 0.67% of 747 operated cases.
    • Most incidental meningiomas, excluding one larger case, lacked definite feeding arteries and were easily extirpated with favorable outcomes.
    • The findings highlight the importance of recognizing incidentally discovered meningiomas and their generally benign clinical course and surgical management.
