[Effect of serum factors on antibiograms]
Abstract:
The influence of serum factors on the antibiogram was investigated in 21 patients. The plate culture and the culture in tubes were used in combination. A different interaction of the 4 examined antimicrobiotics (gentamycin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and nitrofurantoin) with the serum factors was shown which were modified by the duration of the infection (pyelonephritis).
Insights
Serum factors affect antibiotic susceptibility testing in patients with pyelonephritis. The study reveals how infection duration alters antimicrobial interactions, impacting treatment effectiveness.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Clinical Chemistry
- Pharmacology
Context:
- Investigated the impact of serum factors on antibiotic susceptibility testing.
- Included 21 patients diagnosed with pyelonephritis.
- Utilized combined plate and tube culture methods.
Purpose:
- To determine how serum factors influence antibiograms.
- To analyze the effect of infection duration on antimicrobial-serum factor interactions.
Summary:
- Observed distinct interactions between four antimicrobials (gentamycin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, nitrofurantoin) and serum factors.
- Demonstrated that the duration of pyelonephritis modifies these antimicrobial-serum factor interactions.
- Findings suggest a complex interplay affecting antibiotic efficacy in urinary tract infections.
Impact:
- Highlights the importance of considering patient-specific serum factors in antibiotic sensitivity testing.
- Provides insights into optimizing antimicrobial therapy for pyelonephritis based on infection duration.
- Contributes to a better understanding of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in urinary tract infections.
