    Pneumatic antishock trousers (PT) do not significantly alter lung function in healthy adults when inflated. The study found no acute changes in pulmonary indices, suggesting PT inflation is safe for respiratory mechanics in supine individuals.

    Background:

    • Limited data exists on the impact of pneumatic antishock trousers (PT) on pulmonary function.
    • Understanding these effects is crucial for patient safety during medical interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the acute effects of pneumatic antishock trousers (PT) inflation on various pulmonary function parameters.
    • To assess changes in lung volumes, compliance, diffusing capacity, and respiratory pressures.

    Main Methods:

    • 10 healthy, nonsmoking adults were studied in three conditions: seated without PT, supine without PT, and supine with PT inflated to 100 mm Hg.
    • Measurements included forced expired volumes, lung volume subdivisions, quasistatic lung compliance, single-breath diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide, and transdiaphragmatic pressure.
    • Pulmonary function was assessed at resting lung volume.

    • Assuming a supine position without PT caused significant reductions in forced expired volume in 1 second, lung volume subdivisions, total lung capacity, functional residual capacity, expiratory reserve volume, and transdiaphragmatic pressure.
    • PT inflation to 100 mm Hg in the supine position did not result in significant changes in any measured pulmonary indices, except for transdiaphragmatic pressure.
    • Transdiaphragmatic pressure showed a significant change with PT inflation.

    Conclusions:

    • Pneumatic antishock trousers (PT) inflation in supine, normovolemic individuals does not acutely cause significant alterations in overall lung function.
    • The observed changes in pulmonary function when moving from seated to supine are more pronounced than those induced by PT inflation itself.
    • These findings suggest that PT inflation is unlikely to have detrimental acute effects on respiratory mechanics in this population.
