    Summary

    The right thyroid lobe is twice as likely to develop benign nodules compared to the left. This higher frequency is not explained by a significantly larger mass of the right lobe in normal thyroid glands.

    Background:

    • Benign thyroid nodules are common findings.
    • The distribution of nodules between the right and left thyroid lobes is not fully understood.
    • Previous assumptions suggested anatomical differences might explain lobe prevalence.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the frequency of benign nodules in each thyroid lobe.
    • To investigate the relationship between thyroid lobe mass and nodule frequency.
    • To provide data on the laterality of benign thyroid nodule occurrence.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 214 patients undergoing thyroid operations with pre-operative scintiscans.
    • Comparison of nodule frequency between right and left thyroid lobes.
    • Anatomical study involving bisection and weight comparison of 15 normal thyroid glands from autopsy cases.

    Main Results:

    • Benign nodules occurred twice as frequently in the right thyroid lobe compared to the left.
    • Autopsy analysis showed the right lobe was larger in 13 out of 15 normal thyroid glands.
    • The average weight difference between the right and left lobes was only seven percent.
