[Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus]
Abstract:
The degree of the thyroid dysfunction was determined in 100 women, suffering from endemic goiter, on the basis of the clinical pattern metabolic findings, the degree of 131I absorption by the thyroid and 131I-labelled thyroxine -- F-factor. The glucose tolerance test (GTT) was performed. In patients with euthyrosis and thyrotoxicosis the insular apparatus response to hyperglycemia was not sufficient. In 31% of the patients GTT was decreased. Latent diabetes mellitus was seen in 17% of the subjects and an evident from the disease in 10%. The thyroid dysfunction in the region of endemic goiter may be responsible for the diabetes mellitus development. The significance of this factor increases depending on thyrotoxicosis intensity.
