    Beta blockers combined with physical training may hinder fitness gains. Propranolol administration during exercise training in rats blunted beneficial adaptations, suggesting this combination may not serve the purpose of increasing physical fitness.

    Background:

    • Beta-adrenergic blocking agents are common hypertension treatments.
    • Physical training also lowers blood pressure, prompting physician recommendations.
    • The combined effects of beta-blockade and physical training on physiological responses are not well understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate how beta-blockade (propranolol) affects physiological adaptations to physical training.
    • To compare the effects of swimming and running training under propranolol influence.
    • To determine if propranolol interferes with training-induced beneficial changes.

    Main Methods:

    • Laboratory rats were used as an animal model.
    • Two training types were employed: swimming and running.
    • One group trained without medication; another trained with propranolol (10 mg/kg).

    Main Results:

    • Swimming training induced adaptations similar to cold acclimation, which propranolol hampered.
    • Running training increased skeletal muscle oxidative enzymes but did not cause cold acclimation-like effects.
    • Propranolol also antagonized running-induced changes, including those related to physical fitness measures like cardiomegaly and bradycardia.

    • Noradrenaline release is likely responsible for some training adaptations, which propranolol inhibits.
