Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

307
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Narcolepsy01:07

Narcolepsy

587
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by pervasive, uncontrolled sleepiness and other sleep disturbances. One of its hallmark symptoms is an abrupt transition to REM sleep upon falling asleep, which causes symptoms typically associated with this phase to occur unexpectedly during wakefulness. These include the following symptoms, which typically last from a minute or two to half an hour.

Responses to Salt Stress

14.6K
Salt stress—which can be triggered by high salt concentrations in a plant’s environment—can significantly affect plant growth and crop production by influencing photosynthesis and the absorption of water and nutrients.

The pupil dark response in narcolepsy

    Summary

Pupil responses to darkness were similar in narcoleptic patients and normal individuals. Pupillography cannot reliably distinguish between these groups, despite some narcoleptics falling asleep during testing.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Neurology
    • Sleep Medicine

    Background:

    • Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder affecting the brain's ability to regulate sleep-wake cycles.
    • Previous research suggested pupillography might differentiate narcoleptic patients from healthy individuals.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the pupil dark response in narcoleptic patients versus normal volunteers.
    • To evaluate the utility of pupillography in distinguishing narcolepsy.

    Main Methods:

    • Pupil dark response and pupil area maintenance in darkness were measured.
    • Seven narcoleptic patients and 14 age-matched normal volunteers participated.

    Main Results:

    • Onset and degree of miosis (pupil constriction) were similar between narcoleptic patients and normal volunteers.

  • Three narcoleptic patients, but no normal volunteers, fell asleep during the pupillography tests.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pupillography is not a reliable method for distinguishing narcoleptic patients from normal individuals.
    • Findings contradict earlier suggestions regarding the diagnostic value of pupillography in narcolepsy family studies.
