Clonidine
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular pharmacology
- Hypertension research
- Clinical pharmacology
Context:
- Essential hypertension is a common condition.
- Understanding drug response is crucial for effective treatment.
- Individual patient factors influence drug efficacy.
Purpose:
- To investigate how initial hemodynamic parameters, sex, and age affect the response to hypotensive drugs.
- To determine the influence of patient characteristics on the efficacy of clonidine, propranolol, oxylidin, and aldomet.
Summary:
- Clonidine's blood pressure-lowering effect depends on patient age, not sex.
- Initial hemodynamic parameters correlate with propranolol and oxylidin efficacy.
- Aldomet's efficacy was not linked to initial hemodynamics, sex, or age.
- Propranolol, aldomet, and oxylidin effects were independent of patient sex and age.
Impact:
- Provides insights into personalized hypertension treatment strategies.
- Highlights the importance of considering age in clonidine therapy.
- Suggests further research into hemodynamic predictors for propranolol and oxylidin response.
Abstract:
The relationships between initial parameters of systemic hemodynamics, sex and age and the effect of hypotensive drugs were studied in patients with essential hypertension. It was shown that the ability of clonidine to decrease blood pressure is not related to the patients' sex but depends on their age. The relationship was revealed between the initial parameters of the hemodynamics and the effects of propranolol and oxylidin. No such a relationship was demonstrated as regards the effect of aldomet. The effect of propranolol, aldomet and oxylidin on human circulation has not been found to depend either on sex or age.
