Recovery of binocular function in kitten visual cortex

F B Levitt, R C Van Sluyters

    Journal of Neurophysiology
    |December 1, 1982
    PubMed
    Summary

Kitten visual cortex cells can regain binocular connections after a short period of induced strabismus. Recovery to normal levels of binocularity occurred within 3-7 weeks of normal visual input.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Developmental Neuroscience
    • Visual System Research

    Background:

    • Binocular vision is crucial for depth perception.
    • Visual deprivation during critical developmental periods can disrupt binocular connections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the recovery of binocular connections in the kitten visual cortex after transient strabismus.
    • To determine the time course and extent of functional recovery.

    Main Methods:

    • Induced strabismus in normal kittens for 12 hours over 2 days.
    • Performed single-unit recordings in the striate cortex.
    • Allowed recovery periods of 3 or 7 weeks of normal binocular vision.
    • Conducted histological analysis of cortical laminae.

    Main Results:

    • Optically induced strabismus significantly reduced binocular receptive fields in the visual cortex.
    • Following recovery periods, cortical binocularity returned to normal levels.
    • Both 3-week and 7-week recovery periods yielded similar levels of binocularity recovery.
    • Recovery was observed uniformly across all cortical laminae.

    Conclusions:

    • The kitten visual cortex demonstrates significant plasticity and can recover functional binocular connections after a brief period of visual disruption.
    • The recovery process is effective within weeks and occurs broadly across cortical layers.
    • Subliminal cortical input may contribute to the restoration of binocular function.
