    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Internal Medicine

    Background:

    • Anorexia nervosa is a severe eating disorder with significant long-term health implications.
    • Understanding the long-term prognosis of anorexia nervosa is crucial for effective patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the intermediate and long-term outcomes of anorexia nervosa patients.
    • To identify factors influencing the prognosis of anorexia nervosa.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 50 anorexia nervosa patients was followed over a decade.
    • Patient outcomes were assessed using a 5-item scale evaluating weight, menstruation, social adjustment, psychological state, and feeding attitude.
    • Intermediate (2-3 years) and long-term (4+ years) outcomes were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Good outcomes (score 0-1) were significantly more frequent in the long term (34.5%) compared to intermediate outcomes (14.3%).
    • Improvements were associated with weight restoration and better social/family/sexual adjustment.
    • Poor outcomes (score >3) occurred in 34.5% of cases, with 3 reported deaths. No significant changes were observed after 4 years.
    • Initial weight loss was the only significant predictor of long-term outcome.

    Conclusions:

    • Anorexia nervosa is a severe condition with a protracted course.
    • Long-term follow-up reveals potential for improvement, particularly in weight and social functioning.
    • Early weight restoration is a key factor for favorable long-term prognosis.
