    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the heritability of protein excretion in Sprague-Dawley rats.
    • To determine if protein excretion levels correlate with the development of chronic progressive nephrosis.
    • To assess the potential of selecting for low protein excretion to mitigate nephrosis.

    • Male Sprague-Dawley rats were categorized as low or high protein excretors.
    • A diallele cross breeding strategy was employed using these males and females.
    • Protein excretion and survival were monitored in 263 male offspring.
