    Background:

    • Bed rest leads to deconditioning, reducing cardiorespiratory fitness.
    • Previous research suggests a potential relationship between baseline fitness and deconditioning magnitude.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To test if the reduction in peak oxygen uptake (VO2) after bed rest is proportional to pre-bed rest peak VO2.
    • To investigate factors influencing VO2 changes post-bed rest.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of pre- and post-bed rest working capacity and body weight data from 32 subjects (24 men, 8 women).
    • Involved 14-20 days of bed rest without interventions.
    • Regression analysis of percent change in peak VO2 against pre-bed rest peak VO2.

    • Overall regression analysis showed no significant correlation (r = -0.03 to -0.17) between pre-bed rest peak VO2 and its reduction post-bed rest.

    • Orthostatic factors and exercise testing methods (treadmill vs. cycle ergometer) significantly influence VO2 variability.
    • High levels of physical fitness and upright body positioning may increase variability in VO2 measurements post-bed rest.
